Pros news

I hope you all had a good time over the festive season. It was lovely to spend some time with my family, we headed down to see my In-Laws in Cornwall for Christmas and apart from the journey it was really nice. As you can see from the picture here, Freddie was extremely happy with his Star Wars lightsaber that Father Christmas got him (good 'ol Santa huh?) and Jack just wanted everyone to play with everybody else's presents!

As much as I enjoy this time of year, I must admit it's nice to get back to normal…whatever that is!

Pro Am

Pro-Am opportunity with Rob and Jo

The Surrey PGA will be holding its biggest one day Pro-Am on Tuesday, 23 February and we'd love you to join us! The format is a 12pm shotgun start on one of Surrey finest heathland courses: Farnham, Hindhead or my favourite Hankley Common. Following the golf will be a Gala Fundraising Dinner and entertainment at the Brooklands Museum in Weybridge.

I've been a member of the Surrey PGA for over 20 years now and feel it's important to try to give something back. Funds raised from this event will allow The PGA in Surrey to again hold a Surrey PGA Assistants & Trainees Championship, The PGA in Surrey Masters, and Surrey PGA Seniors and Super Seniors Championships - offering the opportunity for PGA Professionals, Assistants and Trainees in Surrey to play for enhanced and additional prize money throughout the year.

If you'd like to join myself and Jo at Hankley Common please call the pro shop or click here to send me an email. The entry fee is £110 per person. Entry closes on Wednesday, 20 January.

Assistants news

Jo - What are you doing this winter to improve your golf?

This time of year is often a time when many of us set resolutions for the coming year, very often these are to lose weight or join a gym, but how many of you set golfing resolutions?

If your golf has hit a wall, setting a resolution to make a meaningful change is as good a time as any. Traditionally resolutions rarely succeed but if approached correctly you can stick to them.

Resolutions typically fail because:

  • We have habits which get in the way of achieving our goals
  • We have constructed an environment that supports our current behaviour

How do I make a change?

  • Focus on positive goals rather than negative ones e.g. "I want to hit more fairways" rather than "I want to stop slicing"
  • A positive goal is something you want to perform; a negative goal is something you want to stop doing
  • Your learnt habits are memories of actions you perform in a particular situation
  • You can't learn to not do something!
  • So if you focus only on stopping behaviours, you will never develop new habits

Setting your resolution

  1. Set yourself a positive goal - this could be to hit more fairways, sink more 5 foot putts or to add 10 yards to your drive
  2. Get help - once you've decided what you want to achieve, get help with what you actually need to do to start achieving your goal. Understanding what you need to do to improve and setting appropriate and realistic goals will help you progress faster
  3. Fit it into your calendar - physically writing stuff into your calendar makes it part of your routine. So if your plan is to perform your practice routine for 5 minutes every day, writing it in your diary will make you more likely to stick to it
  4. Be kind to yourself - real behaviour change is hard! There will be days when you succeed and others when you will fail. On the bad days treat that as an opportunity to learn rather than a reason to give up.

If you would like to talk through your resolution or need help with it, contact me via email at proshop@tyrrellswoodgolfclub.com

Course news

Roll-Up start times

Following the recent Captain's Committee Meeting, it has been agreed that all Roll-Up groups, who usually start at 11:30am during winter months, will formally move to 11am start times during December, January and February. This new start time will begin on Monday, 4 January with the following rules being noted:

  1. The 1st tee will be reserved from 11am for each of these Roll-Ups (Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday)
  2. The 10th tee will only be available for use if the 9th hole is clear
  3. Players making the turn from the 9th must be allowed to integrate with those in the Roll-Up who have been playing from the 10th tee
  4. All Roll-Up organisers have been informed of this change and it has also been agreed that the time will revert back to 11:30am when the daylight hours increase in March

Threeball play only on Tuesday mornings

You will hopefully recall that several weeks ago we announced the result of the Ladies Trial for the format of play on Tuesday mornings. I write now to remind all of you that from this coming Tuesday, 5 January, fourball play will no longer be allowed on Tuesday mornings until the ladies competition has completed its first nine holes. This time is usually between 11:30am and 12pm at which point fourballs may follow the field. Single, two and threeball play is still allowed on the course, when tee reservations permit, but I would like to remind you all that the ladies competition has priority on the course, as all our Club events do.
