Hello golfers,

Pie FaceSo I managed to survive Freddie's 6th birthday party last week, he had a great time with his friends & I managed to behave myself ten pin bowling. We also had a lovely family birthday tea on Friday & decided it was the perfect time to let Freddie open one of his presents. It was a game called Pie Face & if you haven't played it before you really must, I haven't laughed so much for a long time as you can see from the video of my daughter Natalie, Freddie & me.

Competition news

The Winter League Final

The final of this years Winter League was played last Sunday 20th with 52 pairs making the final. Conditions were tough but many congratulations go to Neil Parker & Paul Harris (pictured below) who won the Florence Salver (the main event!) with a score of 39 points.

Now rumour has it that Neil & Paul are going to 'divorce' as a golfing couple because of the new 90% handicap allowance being brought into play this year as both are single figure golfers, so if you're a higher handicapper looking for a new golfing partner you might want to get in touch! I guess it's a good way to sign off chaps! Ray Houlgate & Paul Gillespie finished in second place to win the May Goblets

Also very well played to Pat Rowe & Martyn Jones who won the Paterson Plate on Sunday 20th March with an impressive 43 points. You can see from the picture above Martyn knew how to show off the Captains best side! Steve Mills & Jon Syrett finished in second place with 40 points.

Back to winning ways in Cameron Cup

It was never going to be the best time to play the Captain & me as we were both pretty gutted about our last two match results & were pretty determined not to make it a hatrick of losses. Our challengers last week were Allan Chisholm & Rod Capel who unfortunately bore the brunt of it. With the Captain & I playing very well (the Captain used his shots really well & I didn't drop a shot all day), we finished off the match on the 12th green for our biggest win of the year (so far!) 7&6.

Once again, a very generous donation to the Captains Charity was much appreciated, thank you gents.

So the record so far is - Played 15 & lost just 4. We have two more challenges remaining, Ian Taylor & Phil Wicks followed by Neil Manwaring & Paul Earl to finish on Sunday, what could go wrong!?

Coaching news

Coaching news from Jo - Gaining Distance - Do you know where you strike the ball?

Knowing where you strike the golf ball on the clubface is one of the most commonly overlooked factors in game improvement.

Because of modern technology we have so much information available to us now, we have machines that can tell us the angle of attack, clubface to path, swing direction etc. Of course all of this matters but you can have fantastic club head speed, face position and swing direction but if you are striking the ball all over the club face you are going to hit bad shots.

- Did you know that a ball hit just half an inch off centre results on average in a 10 yard loss of distance?

The clubface and ball spend just 1/2000 of a second in contact at impact, but it is in this tiny sliver of time that the outcome of each shot is determined. If we are impacting the ball off centre then we are never fully able to transfer all of the speed and energy we are creating into the shot.

- How do I know where I'm impacting the ball?

If you struggle with distance or get excessive amounts of curvature on the ball (slice/hook) the first step in improving this is having the knowledge and understanding of what is causing your bad shot/loss of distance.

Impact tape or spray is the first step in understanding what is happening to the ball. Once we have an understanding of where we are striking the ball we can then look at the swing as a whole to understand where this strike comes from.

The next step is to start making some changes to improve the strike.

Start improving your distance this March

This month I have a mini package all about hitting the ball further. It includes a 30minute initial assessment where we analyse your current strike pattern and ball speed. We then plan out your 4 x 45minute sessions, making improvements that are specific to you and your golf.

But hurry this package is only available until the 31st March!
