Hello golfers,
I hope you've managed to avoid the poor weather this week and enjoyed playing some golf. After the fun and games of Freddie's 6th birthday celebrations last week, it seems to have been a fairly quiet week at home - having said that since turning six Freddie has lost both his front teeth. As the kids were off school we took the opportunity to sneak away to Center Parcs in Suffolk for a few days, it's a great place to go with loads to do. Freddie and Jack had a great time, although far too busy for my liking… I think I'm getting old?
This week see's our club AGM on Thursday followed by the hello/goodbye dinner on Saturday night. I hope to see you all there.
I'm sure you'll all remember the name - Lynx Golf are back in a big way. This week saw our latest delivery at Tyrrells of Lynx products. Their new Predator range is a fantastic product, easy to use, an adjustable driver and the best part is it's great value for money. As always with us, demo clubs are available and at prices starting from just £69, it really is too good an offer to miss out on. Click here to view our Lynx range.
The first major of the year is now only a week away and I just can't wait. Make sure you don't miss out on the chance to win some great prizes in our Master Sweepstake. Pop into the pro shop to pick a random player out of the hat for just £2 per pick (or golf ball box to be exact). Prizes will be available for: 1st - £50, 2nd - £30, 3rd - £25, 4th - £20 and 5th - £15. Plus a £10 prize for the leading amateur, senior and Brit. The lucky winners will have their pro shop accounts credited to spend on the fabulous stock we have been unpacking for the past few weeks.
As for my picks, I'm going for a South African winner this year in either Charl Schwartzel or Louis Oosthuizen, I just haven't decided which one yet.
Improve your putting this April
Think back to your last round: how many par putts just slid by? How many three-putts did you make? If you could erase those putts that just lipped out and turn those three-putts in to two-putts, how much better would your score have been? How much happier would you have felt walking off the course?
On average, a player who regularly scores between 80-84 (9-13 handicap) will three-putt 23% of the time between 25 – 40 feet and will only make 1 in 10 putts from 10 feet.
Improving your putting is the easiest way to lower your scores, if you could save even just 3-4 shots per round by putting better, those rounds where you come in with 32-33 points suddenly become 36-37 points. How much of a positive impact would this have on your game?
The importance of putting is no more prevalent than on the LPGA Tour. Lydia Ko ranks 131st in driving distance averaging 246yards off the tee, compared with Lexi Thompson’s average driving distance of 290yards. However, Lydia Ko ranks 6th in putting averaging 28 putts per round, whereas Lexi Thompson ranks 139th in putting averaging 31.5 putts per round. Both players are exceptionally talented but Lydia Ko shows that you don’t have to hit it miles, putting is far more important in scoring well.
A Challenge
Set yourself up with five putts from three feet around a hole. Once you have taken all five putts, move out to five feet. Repeat the process at seven feet, 10 feet, 12 feet and 15 feet. In total you should have 30 putts. Go through your normal pre-shot routine with each putt and mark down how many putts you make. This is a great way to add a bit more structure to your putting practice and give you something to focus on.
Need some help with your putting?
If you feel that your putting is letting you down, this month I have a coaching package specifically about improving your putting. The package consists of:
1 x 30 minute initial assessment
3 x 45 minute putting sessions
The package is available for £120 throughout April

Cameron Cup Update
This week saw the last two challenges in Nigel Jupp's captaincy year. First up were past captain Ian Taylor and Phil Wicks who both played well (Phil, playing off 20 almost knocked his drive onto the 1st green), but they caught us on a good day and we were able to finish the match out on the 15th green for a 4&3 victory.
Our last challenge was against the formidable pair of Paul Earl and Neil Manwaring. After Paul holed a 30 foot putt for birdie on the first I should have known we were in for a tough time. Ten combined birdies later we were shaking hands on the 14th green for a 5&4 loss, our biggest of the year. Both Neil and Paul played very well together which made our job pretty difficult, it also left me wishing I hadn't offered to play for £1 bits either, sorry Captain.
Both pairs very kindly donated all money won towards the Captain's charity which was extremely generous, so thank you gents. It's been an enjoyable year playing with Nigel, we raised a lot of money for The Wooden Spoon, his Captain's charity. We also had a very good run at the 100% record and who knows, maybe next year? Come on, Stuart.
The next 10 days at Tyrrells
Sat 26 Mar - Many congratulations to Tim Wheeldon who won the Saturday Medal by five shots with an impressive nett 65, earning himself a handy three shot handicap reduction in the process. Andreas Antoniou finished in second place with a nett 70. Please click here for the full results.
Sun 27 Mar - Well played to new member Michael Saunt who won the Sunday Medal with a nett 68, unfortunately for Michael this was only his second qualifying competition at Tyrrells and isn't eligible for a prize…yet! So the money goes to Dave Bragg and Chris Marchant with a nett 70. Please click here for the full results.
