There was no golf for me to watch last weekend as we spent a couple of days at Legoland with the kids. It was Freddie's 6th birthday present and with the help of quite a few Tesco Clubcard points, we had arranged to stay in the hotel on site.
We all had a great time as you can see from the picture of Freddie and Emmitt - a character from the Lego movie, probably the most annoying film ever made and so of course one of Freddie's favourites. You can always tell when they've had a good a time as both boys were in tears when it was time to leave.
It's going to be an exciting few weeks in the pro shop as the build up to the FA Cup Final starts. My team, Manchester United, are playing Chris's team, Crystal Palace, on Saturday, 21 May at Wembley. Our shifts on Sunday 22nd could be interesting.
Having said that I didn't get to watch the golf, I always make sure I catch up the latest goings on and so you're going to have to excuse me for this next part...
Callaway makes it five wins in a row
Wesley Bryan (you all know him, don't you?) won on the Web.Com Tour last week with a four-shot victory at the Bosque Mexico Championship. I'm sure I don't need to tell you this, but that's his second win of the season already, pretty much guaranteeing his place on the PGA Tour next week.
So, why am I telling you this? Well...
It's because he also used the new XR 16 range from Callaway and as I told you last week, you really must try these golf clubs if you want to hit more fairways, hit it past your playing partners - even you Neil Manwaring - and play better golf. Demo clubs are available in the pro shop. We'll see you soon.
We've been busy unpacking more boxes of lovely new stock this week. We have a big Tyrrells Wood theme as all our items have the Tyrrells crest on them. From sun hats (that'll be nice) to headcovers to ladies visors to polo shirts - it's all in stock and available now.
I'm sure you remember the name Lynx Golf. I remember Ernie Els and my golfing hero Freddie Couples playing with Lynx back in the day. Well the good news is, Lynx are back with a bang. Not only is it a great product, the thing I like the best is the price - drivers start from just £139 and fairway woods £69. We'll have their fitting technician here on Wednesday, 11 May between 11am and 3pm. Please click here to book your fitting session.
Thank you to all who took us up on the opportunity to try out some of the very latest PING golf clubs this week. We will still have some of their demo equipment here until Monday, so if you'd like to see what the fuss is about please pop into the shop.
How would you like to be more consistent?
If I talk to any golfer, one word in particular comes up more than any other - consistency. This seems to be the thing all golfers are striving towards, but do you know how to achieve it?
What's stopping me being consistent?
For most people, the root cause of their inconsistency comes from inefficient technique. If you have a swing with many moving parts, it will rely heavily on timing. Keep in mind that, on average, the golf swing from start to finish takes around one second to complete. So on a day when you manage to time things pretty well you will hit the ball well, but on a day when that timing is even just a little bit off you won't hit the ball anywhere near as good.
Another area that causes inconsistency is inconsistency of thought. How many times have you picked up a new tip and tried it for a round or even for just a few swings? When it stops working you switch to another swing thought or another tip. Mastery of a skill takes time, but more importantly we need to be mastering something that is relevant to our swing and how we move.
Beware of tips in magazines or on YouTube. These tips are inherently general; they have to be to apply to as many people as possible. How do you know that the latest swing tip you have picked up is even relevant to your swing?
How do I get more consistent?
Consistency comes from having a really simple technique that is easy to repeat. But it also comes from having an understanding of your swing and what you need to do to improve. Why not take advantage of this month's coaching offer, which is all about making your swing simpler, more efficient and more repeatable?

Congratulations to your captain, Stuart Jackson, and lady captain, Marie Munt, for winning the Concord Trophy at Camberley Heath on Thursday, 21 April. Their 43 stableford points was more than enough to win the prestigious greensomes invitation for captains and lady captains from across Surrey. Well done to them both.
On Saturday, the men's team lost to Pyrford in a friendly club match. We played at home, losing 2-3 in another close match (CONGU should check the handicaps of some of the Pyrford players - no sour grapes!).
Thank you to all members who entered the Lombard Trophy PQ over the weekend. Many congratulations to the in-form Peter Robertson who, after winning the Nurrish Cup at the beginning of the month, won the Lombard Trophy PQ. Peter and I will now compete in the South Region Qualifier played on the Old Course at Walton Heath on 21st June. Please stop getting your handicap cut, Peter. If we're lucky enough to win that, an all-expenses paid trip to the Grand Final in Portugal await. It was 17 years ago that I played in the Grand Final, it was held at San Lorenzo that year, blimey I've got old.
John Ling over 55 SGU Pairs KO - Tuesday, 26 April
On yet another cold, sleety and miserable day, 10 specially chosen aging golfers (with generous H/Cs) managed to beat Hindhead GC 3-2. There was late drama in the last match out who were all square after 18 and had to play extra holes in the snow to decide the overall winners. Fortunately, only one hole was required and another wonderful TW victory in the John Ling Trophy was secured. If you haven't played Hindhead before it is a beautiful course, even in the snow. In the 3rd round TW have drawn Gatton Manor or Banstead at home, to be arranged.
