After a solid performance on the European Tour a couple of weeks ago, it was fantastic to see Gary King win the Montecchia Open by Lyoness, a Challenge Tour event in Italy.
Gary birdied the last hole to finish on 17-under-par, and secure a one shot win.
You can read the full report here.
A truly fantastic performance, well played Gary.
When did you last change your wedges?
I have a question for you. The next time you play, how much would your score improve if you only took two shots from 50 yards and in? The answer for many of us would be 'a hell of a lot'. A modern pitching wedge is around 45 degrees, and so it's very important to keep the difference in lofts as consistent as possible. If your next wedge is a 56 degree sand wedge, then that's an 11 degree difference.
That's the equivalent of not having a 7 & 8-iron in your full set
Come and see us in the pro shop, where we can check the specs of your wedges and see if we can fill in the missing gaps. We have the full range of Cleveland wedges, plus their fitting cart, so you'll be able to use one of these great wedges on the course first.
Plus, you can buy one and get a second half price
This is available for a limited time only, click here to learn more or to book a fitting appointment.
Slow play getting you down?
Much has been talked about regarding the pace of play at Tyrrells. Having spoken to many members, one thing seems to be clear - Nobody likes slow play, but unfortunately nobody believes they're slow. If you're not the slow golfer, it may be your playing partner so please take a look at some of these handy hints:
Tee off as soon as the group ahead is clear
The player who is ready should hit, not necessarily the one with the honour
Don't all 'cluster' at one ball, go to your own ball
Hit when ready without delay
Take your practice swings immediately if it does not disturb the player hitting
Watch their shot land to guard against the possibility for a lost ball, and then go through your own routine and swing away
If you are the first one at your ball and you're ready to safely hit, let the others know that you are hitting
Study your putt while others are putting
Continue putting until holed out. Don't mark unless you will step on someone's line or it's a really tricky putt
If you can't score, quit putting and pick up
If you have any more ideas of how to improve the speed of play at Tyrrells, please get in touch here.
The wrong kind of consistency
This month has all been about improving your consistency and has focussed on improving and simplifying swing technique. It's true that generally most of our inconsistencies come from inefficient swing technique and over-complicated thought processes - making it almost impossible to get the club back on the ball in the same position each time.
Have you ever thought about how you play the course - your course management?
It's very easy, especially if you play most of your golf on the same golf course, to get stuck in a rut where we play the same holes in the same way with the same club every time we play.
How many of you have a hole that you always play badly?
It's important to remember that every time you play, the conditions are nearly always different - the wind strength and direction, the pin positions, the firmness of the ground etc. All of these factors should alter the way we approach the hole.
Practice Challenge
Next time you play a few holes for practice, change something about the way you play each hole. This could mean:
A different club from the tee - play a fairway finder with an iron or hybrid
A different shot into the green - three-quarter 7-iron rather than a flat out 8-iron
A different shot around the green - chip & run instead of a high lofted shot
Where is the flag? - Aim for the largest section of green, not necessarily straight at the flag. Give yourself the biggest room for error
Where is the best place to miss? - Would I rather face a chip and run with plenty of green to work with, or a chip over bunkers with 6-feet of green to stop the ball on?

Club vs Chobham - Report by Stuart Jackson
Bad news I'm afraid. We were well and truly thumped, losing 5-1 away at Chobham. Their course is relatively new, 25 years old, but was in good condition. It's quite short at 5863 yards with six par-3s. Their greens, however, are a lot slower than Tyrrells. So far, we have won two and lost three in the new Captain's reign. I blame Doug.
