Last Saturday saw Tyrrells Wood participate in four Interclub competition finals. Unfortunately the results didn't quite go our way. The Hilliard League team lost to Woodcote Park 2-1 whilst the Warren League side lost 4.5-0.5, please read Steve Thorn's match report below:

With much anticipation, the team of: Sean Griscti / Martyn Jones, Rob Cullen / Pat McEnaney, Adam Wieckowski / Geoff Hubbard, Stuart Hood / Gilbert Gehrman, and Steve Thompson / Chris Miller assembled at Kingswood Golf Club for the final of the Warren League against Leatherhead, on Saturday 8th October. All matches were very keenly fought and played in the true spirit of the Warren League. Unfortunately we came a distant second losing 4.5 to 0.5. With Rob and Pat securing the vital 0.5 point to avoid the dreaded white wash! Despite losing, the team spirit was flowing well into the evening, proving once again that win, lose or draw there is no other club quite like Tyrrells. 

On a positive note, Steve Thorn and Paul Gallagher finished in second place in the Plate competition, with a very respectable 47 points, beaten by a single point.

I would like to thank every player who represented Tyrrells Wood and supported me in my first year as Warren League organiser.

In the Surrey County Card Foursomes, the Tyrrells pair of Mike Scott and Mark Barron did brilliantly to reach the final but they were eventually beaten 3&2 by The Addington, the match being played at West Byfleet. All was not lost on the day though, Tyrrells did manage to win a final, albeit that we had two pairs playing in the same final, but let's not let the details get in the way! Congratulations go to Les Goodall and Steve Mills who beat Adrian Welch and Trevor Steer in the East Section of the Kelso Hamilton Trophy, they'll now play in the Grand Final against Betchworth Park, on Saturday 29th October, at Royal Mid-Surrey. Dale Challenge Result 

Last week saw the last of our Summer Knockout Finals, completed with Jackie Kingswell & Malcolm Allen winning the Dale Challenge against Allyson Local & Colin Harrod on the 19th hole.

What a start to life at Tyrrells Wood 

What a start to golfing life at Tyrrells Wood for Charlie Crane, who, whilst playing in his first Saturday morning roll-up, secured a hole-in-one! I'm reliably informed it was a five iron on the 4th hole - great shot Charlie!


 

Cameron Cup Update 

It's taken us a while…….. bloomin ages if I'm honest, but it gives me great pleasure to announce the Captain & I have finally won a match! Although we had to work very hard for it.

After our loss last week, where I missed a bunch of putts, I've spent quite a bit of time on the putting green trying to improve. I enlisted the help of Jo, who gave me a couple of simple things to work on, and after some practice and a change to one of the thicker SuperStroke putter grips I felt a lot more positive going into our next challenge.

This time we found ourselves up against Rod Capel & Allan Chisholm and after some excellent golf from all of us we found ourselves in the unusual position of being two up after the front nine, I'd even managed to whole a couple of decent putts! We managed a half on the 10th and Allan made an excellent 4, nett 3, for the win on 11, to get the match back to just 1 down. Not again I thought to myself! I gave myself a good talking to on the way down the 12th tee and then something just clicked, I made four birdies in a row to close out the match on the 15th green! As I said earlier we really had to work hard for the win, I was 6 under par after the 15th, to only win 4&3. It was a good job the match finished there as Rod won the 16th and then Allan hit the shot of the day on the 17th, he holed his 5 wood second shot on the 17th for a 2 nett 1! All in all it was a close game that could have gone either way, Allan & Rod were great company and, like all before them, made a very generous donation to the Captain's charity, thank you gents.

Now you can always tell when a Captain is coming to the end of his year as the Cameron Cup challenges come thick and fast, plus the fact we've been on a losing streak for a while. So on Monday we faced the difficult task of playing Ian Davidson and the in-form John Bone. It wasn't the best of starts for us as we were two down after the first two holes. We steadied the ship a little and then John hit the shot of the day, another holed shot, this time a 9 iron on the 7th hole for a 3 nett 2…… That's twice in two matches! We made it to the turn 1 down and the back nine was incredibly close with only a handful of holes won and lost. It all came down to the last hole, with the match all square, where I made a final birdie to win the hole and the match, that's two wins in a row now - we're on a roll!! I know I say this every time but it was an excellent match to play in, with some good golf played and with another very generous donation to the Captain's charity, thank you Ian & John. Next up for us is Ian Gale & John Luff on Sunday, can we make it three wins in a row?
