Lady Captains Drive In
On Thursday 17th November our new Lady Captain, Anne Stevenson, will drive in. I'm sure you'll join me in wishing her well. A very important part of a Captain's year is the fund raising and Anne has chosen Parkinson's UK as her charity for the year. Now, this is where you come in, to help get Anne off to a great start please pop into the Pro Shop and if you can predict where Anne's drive will finish on the 10th hole you could wine a bottle of wine (click here for the poster and full details). If that's not enough to tempt you up to Tyrrells then we also have our new Ladies Clothing Brand - Swing Out Sister here for the day, click here for full details.

Cameron Cup Update Part 1
Following a week off from challenges (I think we were still getting over the fact we'd gone 3 matches unbeaten!) the Captain & I were challenged twice. Firstly on Sunday against the formidable pair of David Norman & Andrew Ford. If you played on Sunday I'm positive you would have noticed Andrew playing... in the most ridiculous pair of golf trousers I think I've ever seen (zebra print, for the record) and to top it off he had a matching cap as well. Once the match got underway we tried to put the trousers out of our minds and concentrate on the golf. The Captain & I got off to our usual start, we were 3 up after the first 4 holes. Most of you will probably be thinking, that's a good thing, but I've lost count the amount of times we've been 3 up standing on the 4th tee and still lost the front nine!! And so extra concentration was called for and despite me managing to slip over onto my bum on the 7th tee (very embarrassing!) we managed to hold onto our lead at the turn. It was nip and tuck on the back nine and the match could have gone either way. But a couple of key moments went our way and we won on the 15th green 4&3. Thank you Andrew and David for a good match, the company was excellent as was the generous donation to the Captain's Charity.
Part 2
Following on from Sunday's win we were keen to get our next match underway, this time against past winners of the Cameron Cup, Gary Ward & Sean Griscti on Wednesday. The Captain & I didn't get off to the best of starts and found ourselves 1 down after the first 4 holes, now, when you consider we're normally 3 up by this point things weren't looking too good! We managed to hang on for most of the front nine, making the turn just 1 down. The back nine was action packed, birdies, nett birdies and sandy pars seemed to be everywhere with all of us playing our part. It all added up to us standing on the 15th tee one down, the Captain then made a great sandy par for a win and then on the next green Gary hit a great putt (which I still don't know how it missed) for the win and so all we walked to the 17th tee with the match all square. Sean then made a great two putt for a 4 nett 3 to cancel out my birdie which meant we were still all square with one hole left to play. With the honour, the Captain & I didn't exactly put our opponents under pressure with, what's fair to say, not our best tee shots. Sean & Gary took advantage and played the hole solidly, I managed to scramble my way back into the hole and left myself a 5 foot putt on the last green to halve the match……. Unfortunately I missed the putt meaning we lost the match 1 down. I was gutted, I still am if I'm honest. Golf can be such a tough game sometimes especially after playing so well to get the match to that point it was so disappointing to miss the final putt. On the brighter side the Captain's charity received another very generous donation (thanks Gary & Sean) and I'm reliably informed by The Captain we've raised over £500 in the Cameron Cup this year, with five matches to go it would be amazing to see how close to £750 we could get.
More final woes for Tyrrells Wood
Commiserations to Steve Mills and Les Goodall who after battling through to the final of the Kelso Hamilton Surrey Matchplay Final, which was played at Royal Mid Surrey last Saturday, only to be pipped in the final by Betchworth. As I hear they didn't get off to the best of starts and were 3 down after 10, got it all back and unfortunately lost the 17th and 18th to lose 1 down. It was a great effort to get to the final gents, well done.
Last Saturday was the final session of the current Junior Golf Passport coaching group. As it was just before Halloween, the session had a Halloween theme with skeletons, balloons and a pumpkin all out on the practice ground. The session was great fun and all the juniors hit some great shots trying to smash the pumpkin and burst the balloons. They all thoroughly deserved their cake (again Halloween themed!) after the session.
Rob and I went out onto the practice ground later in the afternoon and had a go at smashing the pumpkin; my attempts were all way better than his! Click here to watch me take a shot at the pumpkin.
I am running some Junior Golf Passport sessions in the run up to Christmas. The dates are as follows:
Saturday 12th November
Saturday 26th November
Saturday 3rd December
Saturday 10th December
Saturday 17th December
All the sessions run from 9-10am and are suitable for children aged 5-10. Each session costs £8.50, to book please contact the Proshop or Jo directly - assistant.professional@tyrrellswoodgolfclub.com
