Captain pro challenge

This week the Captain and I were challenged on a frosty Sunday morning by Chris Baron and Peter Meechan in what turned out to be quite a dramatic match. Considering the tricky conditions the scoring all day was spectacular (more on that later). After the front 9 we found ourselves 3 up and with a couple of birdies on the 10th & 12th we were 5 up with 6 holes to play and everything was looking great, but then this is the Cameron Cup and nothing is ever that simple.

Chris made an excellent 3 nett 2 on the 13th, Peter then made another nett 2 on the 14th and quickly followed that up with a nett 3 on the 15th and all of a sudden we were only 2 up. We promptly lost the 16th & 17th holes we were stood on the 18th tee with the match all square and a little shell shocked! But you can always rely on the Captain to come good on the 18th, who produced the shot of the day from somewhere near the 10th tee to a few inches of the hole to win the match……. Phew!

As I mentioned earlier the scoring was amazing, we only halved three holes with a score of par, the other 15 were won or halved with birdies, nett birdies or nett eagles. Our betterball score was 17 under par - what a great game. Thank you Chris and Peter for your company and the generous donation to the Captain Charity.

Gary King Update

You may remember reading in my newsletter earlier this year about Gary King, Gary is an ex Tyrrells Wood member who turned Pro, he's still attached to Tyrrells and this year has been playing on the Challenge Tour which came to its conclusion last week in Oman. The top 16 on the season long order of merit gain a full European Tour card for the following season with Gary needing a top 3 finish. After the first two rounds he found himself in the middle of the field but a course record equalling 63 in the third round gave himself a chance, unfortunately, as we all know golf is a difficult game to play at the best of times, but imagine your next round is going to dictate your livelihood for the next 12 months, that's real pressure. Gary finished in a very credible 12th position for the tournament and 24th position in the rankings.

Winter Motivation

Endless layers of clothing, numb hands, mud, frost and limited daylight - winter golf isn't always the most enjoyable prospect.

When the conditions are bad it's hard sometimes to have the motivation to go out and play or practice - it's far more tempting to stay at home and do those jobs you've been putting off.

Motivation in the winter is key - if you want to play your best golf next summer now is the time to be working on your game. I hate the cold, the thought of standing out on the putting green when it's freezing cold doesn't exactly have me running out the door, putter in hand. But when I enter WPGA events next season, I want to play better, I want to hole more putts and I want to score better.

I've set myself a challenge - whenever I have a spare half hour I'm going to go out and practice my putting. As much as I hate the cold, my motivation to putt better next year is far greater.

Set yourself a challenge - If your goal is to hit the ball more consistently next season or to get off that handicap you've been stuck on for ages, don't wait until the season starts do something about it now.

Ensure you play better and get more enjoyment out of the game next year by working on your game this winter.

Winter Rules

Ground Under Repair (GUR) - Compulsory Relief to be Taken

You may have noticed that the Winter Work Programme has begun around the golf course and we have now marked several areas as GUR. Some of these areas have drop zones (where appropriate) and some don't but regardless of whether relief is taken within a drop zone, or in accordance with Rule 25.1 (Abnormal Ground Conditions) relief from these areas is compulsory.

Not playing from areas marked GUR will aid growth and recovery so we can get them back into play as soon as possible and we appreciate your cooperation with this. For those of you who are not already acquainted with Rule 25.1: Relief must be taken by dropping your ball within one club length of the nearest point of total relief, not nearer the hole, without penalty.
