Phoenix Open 

I spend my Sunday evening watching the Phoenix Open, I can't believe it's been a year since I was there. It's an amazing place to watch golf with the highlight being the short 16th hole. You can see from this video I took of what it's like for the players walking onto the hole, although there weren't 20,000 fans screaming at me at the time. The tournament was won in a playoff for the second year in a row by Hideki Matsuyama. 

Elsewhere, it was very sad to see Tiger Woods withdraw before the second round in Dubai, I'm not sure if he's ever going to get back to playing competitively. On the plus side I was so happy to see Sergio Garcia win, surely it's about time he added a Major.


 

Another week and another load of boxes were delivered to Tyrrells. This week we unpacked the brand new PING Glide 2.0 wedges. 

With added precision milled grooved to increase spin rate and a selection of lofts/bounce/sole options available, this wedge can help all golfers improve their game around the greens, saving us all plenty of shots!

Are you Season Ready? 

A couple of times this week I've been out teaching and it's felt like spring isn't too far away. The sun has been shining and it's actually felt pleasantly warm. It's made a nice change - I've even been out without my bobble hat!

It's made me think more about the season ahead. I play in around 7 WPGA events throughout the summer, I can't control what others do and so I'm not so fussed about targeting finishing in the top 5 for example.

But every tournament I play I'm focussed on coming away feeling like I've done the best that I can, this includes not just how I've played on the day but also how well I've prepared in the weeks beforehand. Afterwards I can assess how my round went and use the rounds I play and the practice I do leading up to the next tournament to make sure I do even better in the next event.

Think about your own golf - do you target a few events/opens/competitions throughout the year that you would like to peak in? It might be a particular match, club championships, a guest day, spring meeting etc.

What do you do to give yourself the best chance of performing at your best?

We can't play our best golf all the time - just like an athlete will structure their training to work up to a big event you can use your time effectively to make sure you are playing your best golf when it really matters.

A game MOT is a great way to assess your game and make a plan for the year ahead. Lasting 30minutes an MOT will cover:

• What events you have coming up
• A target for the year
• Your current game
• What we can do to help you play your best golf through the season

Callaway GBB Epic Review

The all new Callaway Epic driver has been going from strength to strength this week. Firstly, as you may be aware Rory McIlroy chose to use the driver and now the mighty Henrik Stenson replaced his trusty Diablo Octane Tour Fairway Wood with the Epic Fairway Wood, showing just how strong the 2017 product range is. So far the average distance gain is 14.7 yards, so come on, if you want to hit the ball further you really must give this club a try.

Club Fitting Evening 

With the latest golf products now available at Tyrrells we always like to offer you the chance to try these for yourself using our state of the art Swing Studio. With this in mind I will be organising some evening club fitting sessions starting on Wednesday 15th February (5 to 9pm). You'll be able to compare the very latest offerings from PING, Callaway, Wilson and Lynx against your current set.

Summer Knockouts 2017 

Yes folks, it's almost that time of year again to enter our Summer Knockouts. Following on from the success of last year, Finals Day will be the same format and will be played on Sunday 1st October. Please make sure you are available for Finals Day before you enter. The entry book will open in the Pro Shop on Wednesday 1st March.
