Greetings golfers,

We have a very busy week planned at Tyrrells as our AGM will take place on Friday evening including a couple of presentations on some exciting course improvements which I have to say look fantastic. This is followed by our Hello/Goodbye dinner (one of my favourite social nights) on Saturday night. The weekend finishes off with the Club Medal and Captain's Drive In on Sunday complete with hog roast. If you're not playing in the competition but would like to join your fellow members watch the Captain's Drive In then you're more than welcome. To book and join us all for the hog roast, please click here and if you'd like to join in with the fun of predicting where the Captain's drive will finish, then please click here please click here to see the sheet.

I look forward to seeing you all over the next few busy days.

This week is also your last chance to take advantage of our excellent Bag Trade In. The offer is really simple, just give us your old golf bag and we'll give you £20 OFF the price of your new one. But hurry, this offer finishes on Friday 31st March.

Captain pro challenge

Captain & Pro Challenge Update

Last Sunday the Captain and I were challenged by Mark Crompton & Simon Winslade, I said last week it was going to be a tough match and I wasn't wrong! If the way we all played the first three holes were anything to go by we would definitely need our A games to stand any chance. Steve and Mark birdied the 1st for a half, Simon then made a 3 nett 2 on the 2nd for the win and I birdied the 3rd to get the match back to all square, you get the idea! Although by the turn Mark and Simon had moved clear and I'm sure enjoyed their stop at the halfway hut a little more than us, being 3 up. Que the fightback and by the 16th tee it was all square again. The Captain made an excellent putt for a half on the 16th green and we were still tied with two holes to go, could we keep you unbeaten run going? The answer is, no! Mark made an excellent 4 nett 3 on the 17th and Simon took care of the 18th to win the match 2 up and handed us our first loss of the year. I was gutted, I've been practising quite a lot recently in preparation for these matches and my game had been in decent shape for most of the match but two awful tee shots on 17 and 18 really cost me, golf can be tough sometimes can't it? Our consolation however was the extremely generous donation to the Captains' charity by Mark & Simon, thank you gentlemen.

Our Lady Captain, Anne Stevenson and my assistant Jo get their challenges underway on Thursday this week against Diana Morris & Marcelle Jansen, play well ladies. Who knows, as Chris keeps reminding me, by the end of the week I could be the only Pro at Tyrrells to lose a Captain and Pro match this year.

My golf wasn't all doom and gloom last week as our General Manager and myself were invited to play in the very first Surrey PGA Professional and Secretary Challenge. A great idea for Pros and Secretary's to meet up, share ideas and play some fairly competitive golf. The competition was held at Woodcote Park and Phil and I finished in 2nd place.

Major sweepstake

Masters Sweep

We still have a few players left in our Masters Sweep for this year, each pick is just £3 with prizes for the top 5, plus leading amateur, senior and brit up for grabs.

Now, as my Masters fact from last week went down so well, I have another one for you. I mentioned last week that I couldn't believe how hilly Augusta National is, well, the most severe slope on the course is the 10th hole, from the tee to the lowest part of the fairway the drop is 116 feet!

To give you some perspective, that's bigger than the Statue of Liberty or, slightly closer to home (and according to Google) the drop from our 1st tee to the green is a mere 72 feet. You might want to remember that one the next time someone tells you Tyrrells is too hilly and you'll need one leg longer than the other to play here.

Competition results

First board comp of the year

Last Sunday saw the first men's board competition of the year take place with the Nurrish Cup. It's always interesting to see the results of this competition as it's a five club and a putter competition with the option of taking less clubs out with them in exchange for some extra shots on their handicap. Many congratulations to Gregg Barnes for winning with a fantastic Nett 60, Gregg only took a 4 rescue, a 9 iron and his putter. Brent Hearne finished second with a Nett 62 just edging out Billy Atkins on countback who finished third with a Nett 62

For the full results please click here.

Many congratulations to Judy Fernie who won the ladies De Stacpoole Flag competition on a sunny (finally!) Tuesday. Judy finished on the 18th green by holing out with her last shot. Well played Judy!

Academy news

Tyrrells Wood Academy Relaunch - April 1st 2017

We have had a golf Academy here at Tyrrells Wood for over 20 years now, it was one of the first in Surrey, but it's now hard to find a Club in Surrey that doesn't have one which has created far more competition. In recent years the golf industry has faced, and is continuing to face, some very difficult challenges have arose with participation numbers falling at an alarming rate. Supporting a new golfer from their first experience of golf through to full membership has become more important than ever for the long-term sustainability of a golf club.

To improve our Academy we have continually researched other offerings and taken on board direct feedback from our Academy members. Following this process we're delighted to announce that we are re-launching our Academy package from April 1st 2017 which will now provide a more comprehensive and supported route into club membership for new golfers.

Our new Academy programme is unique and unrivalled in the local area, with more individual tuition (on and off the course), group lessons, rules and etiquette sessions, plus more support than any other programme around. Regular structured coaching now ensures continued development while organised playing days and a buddy scheme make the transition into full membership as easy as possible.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in learning to play golf please contact Jo Taylor for further details - assistant.professional@tyrrellswoodgolfclub.com - or pop in to the Office or Professional shop should you wish to find out more.

In addition to the Academy and as part of our commitment to encouraging new golfers, we will also be offering our popular beginner group classes starting in May & June. Again, if you would like more information please pop in to shop and speak to one of the team.
