The US Open

It takes time to get to the top...

After a rather strange US Open at Erin Hills, Brooks Koepka finished as the definitive champion. The golf course was set up in a very different way to usual Open venues, gone were the tight narrow fairways and firm slick greens surrounded by lush rough, and without the wind for the first three days the scoring was unlike any US Open I've ever seen. Credit where credit's due mind, Koepka has definitely earned his way onto the biggest stage. After a decent amateur career in college (apart from his legendary temper!) he missed out on his USPGA Tour Card and also a European Tour Card. Rather than quitting in 2012 he packed his bags and competed on the European Challenge Tour working his way back to the top, impressive stuff!

Thank you to everyone who took part in our US Open Pro Shop Sweepstake, please click here to see who the lucky winners were. With the Open just over a month away we'll be running another sweepstake very soon.

Club championships

A record breaking Club Champs

Good luck to all our competitors taking part in the men's Club Championship this weekend. We have a record number of entrants for Saturday's first round and with just 80 and ties making it through to Sunday's final round the competition is going to be tough.

Success story

Longest Day Challenge

Congratulations to Tyrrells member, Ken Drew, who played 72 holes on one of the hottest days in June on record, at Wentworth on Monday, to raise money for the Macmillan Trust. His fourball have raised over £8000 in total which is a fantastic achievement, well done Ken. 36 holes over this weekend will feel like a little stroll!

Fitting news

Lynx demo success

Thank you to all our Tyrrells members who took the time to visit our Lynx Demo Day last Thursday, the day went very well. Here what Colin Harrod had to say about it:

I signed up for the Lynx fitting day recently and was very impressed with the knowledge and professionalism of their rep Ben. Within a few shots he knew my swing and every club he handed me to try was more accurate and consistent. I had no hesitation in ordering a complete new set and hopefully it won't take too long to transfer that to the course!!

If you missed out this time then fear not, we still have Lynx demo clubs available for you to try out plus Ben will be back later on in the year.

If you'd like to book a fitting then please click here.

Entry fee is £10 per person which includes prizes and a one course meal after your golf. It's a fun, informal competition and online entry opens today! We'd love to see you on the day.

Captain pro challenge

Captain & Pro Updates

Cameron Cup - Last Sunday the Captain and I were challenged by Ian Gale and John Luff, following the disappointment of losing last time out I had a feeling it wasn't going to be easy. The weather and golf course were just about perfect for golf and the match got underway with Ian & I halving the first hole with a birdie. The front nine continued in pretty much the same fashion and we managed to get to the turn 1up. After a couple of very close putts we were 2 up standing on the 13th tee, but two excellent 4 nett 3's on the 13th & 14th from Ian & John got the match back to all square. We were still all tied on the 18th tee and, considering the way we've played the last hole in these matches this year, I wasn't feeling too confident. With the honour, John hit a beautiful drive down the middle of fairway and a decent approach into the middle of green which meant I probably needed to two putt from 40 feet for a par and the halve. Thankfully I hit a nice putt right next to the hole, John was unable to make his and the match finished as a half, which was probably the right result. It was extremely close and could've gone either way. Thank you gents for the game and another generous donation to the Captain's Charity.

Stevenson Cup report from Chris - After our loss last time out against Stuart La Frenais & Andy Foley, Alan & I were determined to gain a positive result against another tough pairing - Stuart Hood & Myles Verlander. We got off to a good start by winning the 2nd hole to go 1 up. After Myles' "indifferent" tee shot on the 4th, he managed to hack out of the long grass to just short of the green, before chipping in for a 3 nett 2! He was not to be outdone by Alan however; after his tee shot found the putting service he rolled in a 20 footer for birdie to halve the hole and keep us 1 up. We managed to extend that advantage to 2 up at the turn before Stuart & Myles began to pull us back with some excellent 4 nett 3's on both the 13th & 14th to move them 1 up. But that advantage didn't last long, after a birdie on 15 from myself and a par on 16, we found ourselves 1 up with two to play. After a great drive on 17, Stuart then managed to top his approach to about 15 feet (as you do) and rolled in his birdie putt for a 3 nett 2 to win the hole and bring the match back to all square. We would then go on to halve the 18th and finish the match all square, I would like to thank both Stuart & Myles for their generous donations to the Captain's Charity, we very much enjoyed your company on the golf course.

Club news

Ready golf

Slow play is always a huge discussion point within the game at all levels and the R&A are taking steps to address it by implementing Ready Golf during this year's Amateur Championship at Royal St. George's. With that standard being set we would like to introduce this to golf at Tyrrells Wood. Please see the guidelines below:
  • Tee off as soon as the group ahead is clear.
  • The player who is ready should play, not necessarily the one with the honour.
  • Don't all "cluster" at one ball, go to your own ball!
  • Hit when ready without delay.
  • Take your practice swings immediately if it does not disturb the player hitting. Watch their shot land to guard against the possibility for a lost ball, and then go through your own routine and swing away.
  • If you are the first one at your ball and you're ready to safely hit, let the others know that you are hitting.
  • Study your putt while others are putting.
  • Continue putting until holed out. Don't mark unless you will step on someone's line or it's a really tricky putt.
  • If you can't score, quit putting and pick up.
