Captain & Pro Update
It was a busy week for the Captain & I, with two tough challenges. The first on a very sunny and very, very warm Friday morning against Steve Thorn & Steve Marrion. The Captain got us off to the perfect start with a birdie on the 1st followed by a nett birdie on the 2nd to put us two up early on, after some closely matched holes we managed to get to the turn 1 up; Where, after a short break, we started the back nine really well, in fact we won the next 5 holes in a row (we were 4 under par for those holes) to close out the match 6&4. Steve & Steve caught us on a very good day. Thank you very much for your company and generous donation to the Captain's charity gents.
Our next challenge was another tough match against Damian Connolly and Rob Cullen. Thankfully the Captain got us off to a perfect start with yet another birdie on the 1st and by the turn we’d managed to double our advantage; however, after an excellent par on the 12th from Damian, a win on the 13th by Rob, and an amazing 4 nett 3 on the 14th from Damian, we were just 1 up standing on the 15th tee. I managed to birdie the next two holes to close out the match for a 3&2 win. Steve and I had managed to continue our good form from our last match (I’d actually birdied all the par 3’s during the round). Damian and Rob were perfect company on the golf course and made a very generous donation to the Captain's charity, thank-you gents.
Stevenson Cup Update
Last Saturday saw Alan and I take on another tough challenge, we were up against Neil Manwaring & Lee Murray. We got off to a poor start after losing the first two holes and it was looking very likely that we were about to lose a third! After Alan and I had both driven it into the trees, we were only able to chip it back into play, whilst Neil & Lee were safely positioned on the fairway. I won’t mention their second shots, but we would somehow go on to win that hole to get back to 1 down, which is how we ended the front nine. After halving the 10th, 11th & the 12th, there was a big turning point in the match on the 13th, after Lee’s superb approach left him about 12 feet from the hole (with a shot!) Alan & I had both missed the green, coming up short with our approaches, needing some brilliance to salvage at least a half! Alan then chipped his ball within gimmie range, forcing Lee to have to hole his putt to win the hole. As I went over to pick my ball up however, I noticed that it wasn’t mine...it turned out that Alan had accidently played my ball which unfortunately ruled him out of the hole, making his score irrelevant. I then had to chip in to force Lee to make his putt for the win, but sadly for us it wasn’t to be and we found ourselves 2 down. An excellent putt on the 14th from Neil moved them 3 up (it is well worth noting that Neil putted superbly on the day) we tried to salvage something in the remaining holes but would eventually lose out on the 16th 4&2. It was a disappointing day from myself & Alan’s point of view but the best team won on the day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Neil & Lee for their enjoyable company and generous donations to the Captain’s Charity. Well played boys! |
