Can someone please tell me what’s going on with the weather at the moment? From a mini heatwave one minute to it chucking it down the next, I haven’t a clue what to put out in the shop at the moment and so we’ve decided to cover every possibility. You can find anything from polo shirts to waterproofs, baseball caps to beanies - all in store. Plus if you haven’t had a chance to see our new Oscar Jacobson range then you really should come and see what you’re missing out on.

Cameron Cup Update

Well, it’s been a while since our last Captain and Pro Challenge and after two defeats in a row it was probably a good thing. However it wasn’t going to be easy as this week we were up against the very formidable pair of Gary Ward and Sean Griscti, who like nothing more than to remind me of their unbeaten run against me in this competition. After nine holes things weren’t quite going our way as we were 1 down. The turning point of the match was on the 13th hole which Sean birdied for a nett 2 and the win to go 2 up, although he was helped a little by the Captain who managed to play the wrong ball into the green…. A school boy error! He very quickly redeemed himself with a 4 nett 3 and a win on the 14th, I birdied the 15th and Steve made another great nett birdie on the 16th to put us 1 up with two to play. I’m delighted to say we managed to hold on to win the match 1 up and I’ve got that monkey off my back…. Finally! It was an extremely tight match with all four of us playing some excellent golf which was followed by another very generous donation to the Captain's Charity, thank you Gary and Sean.

Love.golf in Switzerland

Since early this year I have been running the love.golf project here at Tyrrells. The programme is completely different to any beginner coaching programme, focussing on playing golf from the first session. Love.golf is backed by Syngenta whose Turf and Landscape division conducted a huge research project into golf and female participation.

I was fortunate enough to be selected to coach as part of the love.golf team at Syngenta’s company golf day in Switzerland.

Unlike many corporate days this was different. Run over 2 days, non-golfing employees from Syngenta’s global HQ in Basel were offered the opportunity to experience golf for the first time. I was part of a team of 4 coaches, 3 of us met for the very first time at Heathrow before we boarded our flight!

To most people, golf is perceived as complicated, too difficult, exclusive, technical, boring and many believe they have to be a certain standard before they can even think about going out on the golf course.

We spent an hour with each group of new golfers, introducing full swing and putting in its simplest form. After just an hour we had each group on the golf course playing golf.

At the end of each session there wasn’t a single person walking off the course that didn’t have a smile on their face. The feedback was great with so many asking how they could continue playing.

Just the 2 hours we spent with each group changed their perception of golf entirely, it was fantastic to be a part of.

We also had former Solheim Cup Captain Carin Koch with us on the second day. Carin is Syngenta’s golf ambassador, it was great to meet her and to chat with her.

As a thank you we were all given a flag signed by Carin - a really lovely memento of the trip.

Sunday 24th September

Very well played Alan Self who won the Men's autumn meeting with an impressive nett 64, although I’m not too sure of his timing though as Alan's due to play in Finals Day this Sunday in the Blades Cup. All of his good work in the Autumn Meeting meant a two shot reduction in his handicap. Neil Parker won the gross prize with a nice return to form with a 73.

The men’s spring and autumn meetings are combined to give us the winners of the Edgcumbe and La Frenais Trophies. Many congratulations to Warren Burton for winning the Edgcumbe Trophy with a combined nett score of 139, Chris Miller finished second with an equally impressive total of 141.
