Don't be negative
I’ve had a few conversations during my coaching this week about negative thinking and how it inhibits our performance. It’s so easy to think negatively on the golf course, we have so much time in between shots to overthink. You can slip into the habit of negative thinking without realising you’re doing it. Next time you play pay attention to your thoughts, how many times do you use a negative when you play a shot? ‘Don’t leave it short’ ‘don’t thin it’ ‘don’t hit it in the bunker’ This kind of negative thought is so easy to fall into, until you change how you look at a shot it's really difficult to improve. Write down some of the thoughts you have on the course and then re-write them, making them positive. Shifting what you focus on may help – make your target small and specific. Focus on something in the distance (a tree, a building) rather than what is immediately in front of you (a bunker, the rough etc). Be kind to yourself too. How many times do you hit a bad shot and feel like it's what you expected, but when you hit a good shot feel that it was just luck? Change how you think about a good shot – if you hit a good shot feel good about it. Changing how you think can make a big difference to your overall score and enjoyment of the game.
