Think your way to better Scores On the golf course most people have a running dialogue with themselves, have you ever stopped and listened to what you’re telling yourself? How many times do you find yourself mentally rehearsing the worst possible outcome of a shot? Positive self-talk is a mechanism that can help to overcome negative thinking on the golf course. Negative thinking increases anxiety levels and has a detrimental effect on performance. Positive self-talk mentally motivates and encourages yourself as opposed to letting that critical voice inside your head get the better of you. Positive self-talk strategies: - Change your internal dialogue from negative to positive – if you need to, make notes after your round of some of the negative thoughts you had, then change them into positives
- Focus on things that are in your direct control – you can’t do anything about a bad bounce, but you can go through your pre shot routine and the process of playing each shot ensuring you’re giving each shot the proper amount of attention
- Make sure you have a target – focus on something specific, its far more positive to focus on where you want to hit the ball rather than dwelling on all the places you don’t want to hit it
