Thank you to everyone who took part in this weekend's putting challenge, I hope you all found it useful. We set out two challenges highlighting the importance of distance control & holing out with the added pressure us watching and keeping score……. And the winner of a beautiful PING pencil bag is ….. Mr Steve Thorn! Well done Steve.
It seems to be a well-known fact that if you want to improve your scores & handicap then improving your putting is the quickest way to achieve it. I'd also add the fact that most of us don't (& I certainly never will!) have the strength & flexibility to hit a ball like a Tour Pro, however putting is an area of the game were we all have the biggest opportunity to improve our scores.
So, I'd like to challenge you to improve your putting this season. Over the next few rounds of golf I'd like you to count the number of putts you take when playing 18 holes - that's every time you use your putter!! If that number is over 32 you're needlessly wasting shots.
When watching the Tour Professionals play I'm always amazed at just how well they putt & their stats don't lie. Did you know the leading lag putter on the PGA Tour 2 putts 95% of the time from outside 30 feet? And holes 98% of putts inside 5 feet. How do your scores compare?

The US PGA Championship Sweepstake
The 96th PGA Championship will be played at Valhalla Golf Club starting on 7th August. We will be running our last Major sweepstake of the year. Each pick is just £2 with the top 3 players picking up the prizes! If you can't make it to Tyrrells before Thursday 7th August please click here to send us an email & we'll pick a player for you!
I read this week that as well as holding the PGA Championship, Valhalla will be hosting the return of the PGA Championship Long Drive Competition, which originated in 1952 when the Championship was conducted at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville (Harold Williams won the original contest in 1952, with a 329-yard drive!!!) During a practice round on Tuesday 5th August all players will be offered the opportunity to hit one tee shot from the No. 10 Tee. The ball will have to come to rest in the fairway to be eligible to win the Long Drive Competition.
Cameron Cup
Last week saw the start of this years Cameron Cup (the Captain & Professional Challenge) which unfortunately (for me!) started in the same way as last year…With a loss…In the first match! … Against the same pair! What's the saying about lightening striking twice?? Past Captains, Terry Gauntlett & Ian Taylor took on Chris & myself and despite our best efforts (I'd made 7 birdies after 13 holes & we were still one down!) The match finished on the 17th green. My only saving grace was that with the amount of bits won during the match at least the Captains Charity had a nice donation! If you would like to challenge the Captain and myself in the Cameron Cup the sign-up sheet is in the mens changing room.
Lady Captain & Assistant Pro Challenge
Jo says - Sue and I played our second Lady Captain Challenge match against Pam Tuke and Flick Saunders. Pam and Flick played very steady and the match, after starting on the 10th, was all square after 9 holes. Sue holed 2 great putts on 3 and 4 for birdies and we eventually won 4&3. Our next match was against Diana Morris and Marcelle Jansen who got off to a fantastic start with a birdie on the first. Sue and I managed to claw the match back to all square but eventually lost on the 17th.
