A 'Major' player...

Did you stay up and watch Brooks Koepka win the USPGA Championship?

I hope you took my advice from last week and backed him to win. Although he struggled on a very difficult final day, Brooks went on to win by two shots and the American has now successfully defended both the US Open and US PGA to take his Major tally to four, equal with the likes of Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els. Bethpage Black looked ridiculously tough on Sunday, add some awful fan behaviour, and this future Ryder Cup venue could prove ‘interesting.’

I was really impressed by the performance of Sky Sports Rich Beem, winner of this championship in 2002, as he shot two 69s during the week which, for someone who plays no tournament golf, is pretty impressive.

Stevenson Cup Update from Chris

Last week saw the vice-Captain and I take on our second challenge of year, hoping to redeem ourselves after our dismal first game. Our opponents this time out were Grant Buxton & Damian Connolly.

The match got off to a decent start with Grant and I halving the 1st in birdies, before a birdie from me on the 2nd was only good enough for a half, with Damian making good use of his shot. We would lose the 3rd, but got it straight back on the 4th courtesy of Chris’ 4 nett 3.

Birdies on the 5th and the 7th from myself were good enough for a win moving us 2 Up. But an excellent par on the 8th from Damian was quickly followed by a superb birdie on the 9th, which saw us end the front nine 1 Up.

Damian and I halved the 10th with birdies before another birdie from myself on 11th restored our 2 Up advantage. An excellent 5 nett 4 on the 12th from Grant halved the deficit again, before wins on the 13th and 14th moved Chris and I 3 Up. Ultimately, a par on the 15th would be good enough to win the hole, and the match 4 & 3.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank both Damian and Grant for their pleasant company, and also for their generous donations to the Captain's Charity. Thank you gents!

Summer is almost here and now is the perfect time to work on your short game. Saving shots around the green is the easiest way to dramatically improve your scores. Over the next few weeks I have a selection of coaching clinics to help you lower your scores.

Captain's Prize

Last Sunday saw the Captain's Prize contested with 123 members teeing up at 08:30 for a shotgun start.

The early morning drizzle thankfully disappeared allowing everyone to enjoy the day. I thought the scoring was going to be difficult but Lewis Hay raced through the field to post an impressive 44 points, winning by four points. Jim Bowles finished in second place (with his newly fitted Titleist irons from us!) Thank you to everyone who also took part in the Beat the Pro Challenge on the 16th hole. With your help we raised over £500 for the Captain’s Charity.

Most overlooked club in the bag?
