Cameron Cup Another week and our 10th Captain & Pro Challenge of the year. This time we were up against Steve Grimshaw and Eddie Shiels. We were going to be giving away lots of shots and so we needed to be on our game. After seven holes things were looking good, Rob and I had played well, were two up and looking forward to a nice sausage roll at the halfway hut. Unfortunately, for us, and due to some excellent golf from Eddie and Steve we lost the next three holes in a row and were still 1 down on the 13th tee. Eddie then hit an excellent approach to 20 feet from a tricky position and was on the green for nett 1, I had also hit the green and was about 8 feet away but in two. But as I was lining up my putt I noticed Eddie had already hit his putt past the hole and then bizarrely picked his ball up, I didn’t have a clue what was going on. It turned out, in what can only been described as a ‘senior moment’, he’d picked his ball up on the green without marking it. He suddenly realised what he’d done, put the ball back down a hit the putt. It was only after he’d picked his ball up (for the second time!) did he tell us what had happened. To make matters worse, if he’d just told us what he’d done in the first place, under the new rules you can replace the ball on the green under no penalty. Oooooops! As it turned out we felt a little sorry for our opponents and so the Captain gave Steve a putt for the half. We lost the next hole and then managed to win 15 and 16 and after a halve on the 17th we were all square standing on the 18th tee. None of us played our best golf down the last but thankfully we managed to halve the hole and the match. Thanks Steve and Eddie for the game and your generous donation to the Captain’s charity. It was an extremely close match that could’ve gone either way on the last hole and who knows what would’ve happened if Eddie hadn’t picked up that ball on 13. At least you didn’t leave your golf clubs by the terrace and didn’t realise until you were on your way home, huh Mr Captain?
