Welcome to this week's newsletter. I hope you all managed to get out onto the course and enjoy the sunshine last weekend, it felt like the summer was here again…for a couple of days at least.
Hopefully, you managed to watch the Solheim Cup this weekend, what a fantastic finish to the tournament, you couldn’t make it up! Suzann Pettersen, a controversial wildcard pick, holes the winning birdie putt on the last green, in the last match, to decide the fate of the Solheim Cup…. And then retires from tournament golf. Talk about going out at the top. Let’s hope it acts as a boost for the Ladies European Tour and women’s golf in general.
Enjoy the rest of this week's read. |

Pro's Day
A massive thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s Pros Day. We were blessed with perfect conditions to play golf; the course was looking fantastic with a superb hog roast awaiting us after our golf. It’s great to get the three of us out of the shop playing in a competition. As for the results, many congratulations to Dan Blythe who played extremely well, shooting 44 points and a four-point win over Derek Atkinson.

Tyrrells is on a roll
On Saturday, 14 September, we hosted our Warren League semi-final match against Woodcote Park. The weather was glorious, and the course was in fantastic condition. Jason Higgleton was practising hard, on the range at Woodcote Park. The team consisting of:
- Andy Foley and Jason Higgleton - Steve Marrion and Paul Willis - Tony Fenton and Paul Gallagher - Adam Wieckowski and Paul King - Gilbert Gehrmann and Nick Potter
Went into battle, at the turn all were fairly close, with pairs coming from behind to half or take a narrow lead into the back nine. The back nine, then proved the undoing of Woodcote, with team Tyrrells winning 5-0. With no match going to the 18th. Well done guys.
I think that it is fitting to post the comments by the Captain of Woodcote Park when emailing the Warren League organiser.
‘Tyrrells was in great condition with extremely fast greens and having won their league Steve and his team made very good use of home advantage as you can see from the 5-0 result. They were most hospitable and even at this late stage in the competition the matches were played in a very good spirit. I sincerely hope they can go one step further than last year and put a different name on the Cup’.
We should be proud of our course and the hospitality shown. I would like to thank the bar and catering staff, for all their efforts throughout the season, it is very much appreciated.

Cameron Cup update
Last week the Captain and I were challenged by Ian Gale and John Luff, fresh from their golfing (& drinking) trip to Turkey. It clearly did their golf some good as they got off to a great start and we were down early on. Ian had used his shots very well and when we thought we stood a good chance to get back to all square John holed an excellent putt on the 9th green to stay 1up at the turn.
The stop at the halfway hut seemed to help as John birdied the 10th to double the advantage and as hard as we tried on the back nine, they were just too good for us. We shook hands on the 16th hole and a 4&2 loss, walking back we worked out Ian and John were 9under par for the 16 holes we‘d played, that would’ve taken some beating. Thank you both for your company on and off the course and another generous donation to the Captain’s charity. |
Stevenson Cup update from Chris
After wins in our last three challenges, Chris and I were hoping to continue our good form as we took on two tough challenges. First up were Simon Cheung and Myles Verlander. We managed to win the 1st after a nice birdie from myself, a couple of halves followed, before a superb birdie on the 5th from Myles brought us back to All Square. An excellent 5 nett 4 from the Vice-Captain on the 7th moved us back to 1up, before my birdie on the 9th was only enough for a halve after Simon’s excellent 3 nett 2. We continued our good play into the back nine as Myles and I halved the 10th in birdies. A par on the 12th was good enough for Chris and I to win the hole and move 2up, before Myles’ impressive 4 nett 3 on the 13th halved our advantage. Another well-played hole by the Vice-Captain on the 14th restored our 2up lead, which is how we stood on the 17th tee. Only needing a halve to win the match, Myles put us under pressure after another excellent 4 nett 3 took the match down the last. A fantastic approach from Myles set up a chance to halve the match...fortunately for us it would slide by and result in another victory for the Vice-Captain and I. I’d like to thank both Simon and Myles for the game and also for their generous donations to the Captain’s Charity. Thank you gents.
Our second challenge saw us take on Steve Thorn and Simon Winslade. The match got off to a great start, with Chris and I both making birdies on the 1st to match Simon’s birdie before the Vice Captain’s excellent 4 nett 3 on the 2nd moved us 1up. Our good play would continue on the 3rd as the Vice-Captain holed it from off the green to match Simons birdie and keep us 1up. The birdies dried up as the nine went on, but Chris and I played some steady stuff which saw us reach the turn 3up. Onto the back nine, a par would be good enough to win us the 10th and increase our advantage to 4up. Two superb chips from both Steve and Simon on the 13th set up 4 nett 3’s to win the hole and reduce our lead to 3up. A great approach shot from the Vice-Captain on the 14th set up an excellent 4 nett 3 to win us the hole before going on to close out the match on the 15th for a 5&3 victory. A special mention to the Vice-Captain who played some very impressive golf throughout the match and who also wanted me to mention that he made more birdies than me...although I only had 1...well played Chris. I’d also like to thank both Steve and Simon for their pleasant company both on and off the course, and also for their generous donations to the Captain’s Charity. Thank you chaps. |

It's great walking to the first tee with a new driver in hand (that's been custom fitted to suit your swing, of course) that you know will help you outdrive your playing partners, but sometimes it can be a simple change to the ball that you're using that has the biggest effect on your game. |
