The champagne will have to wait
It was a case of so near and yet so far for our finalists from last week. It started on Saturday when our Men’s Warren League team lost 3-2 to Leatherhead in the final, it seems to be a bit of a habit losing to them in a final, unfortunately. Tyrrells won the first two games but were unable to win in any of the last three. However, it was another great achievement making it to back-to-back finals, well played to all who were involved in this season’s campaign.

It was so near and yet so far for Marcelle Jansen and Neil Manwaring as well, as they lost on the 18th green in the Surrey County Thornhill Cup played at Betchworth Golf Club on Sunday. It was a fantastic achievement to get to the final, well played Marcelle and Neil. Congratulations do go to Andrew Ford who won the Peter Earle Masters at Tyrrells on Sunday. In one of the best fields of the year, with entry only to those members who have won a competition throughout the year, the Masters is definitely one to win. Andrew shot a fantastic nett 66 to win by two shots from Tom Orris. You can see Andrew receiving the trophy from Club Captain, Rob Cullen and before you ask, no he didn’t buy those trousers from me.

Cameron Cup update The Cameron Cup got back underway last week, in the wind and rain with a tricky challenge from Paul Hibbert and Tom Orris. I’ll let you into a little secret, I’ve turned into a fair-weather golfer and so I sent the Captain a subtle text in the morning to see if he’d bite and re-schedule the match. Sadly, for me, he was having none of it and so we got underway. The front nine was scattered with gale-force winds, rain showers but considering the weather some surprising good golf. Tom played a superb chip to win the 4th which was followed by Paul who made an excellent 4 nett 3 on the 6th and a 25-foot birdie putt on the 7th. The Captain won the 8th hole and at the turn, we were all square. After some ‘interesting’ drives from the four of us on the 10th, the back nine followed a similar trend. Paul hit a fantastic approach to the 11th for a birdie and the win. The standard of play on the back nine was excellent and we were still all square standing in the 18th tee despite the fact I’d birdied the 14th, 15th & 17th holes. Thankfully I wasn’t finished as I managed to hole a 20-foot birdie putt on the last to win the match. Truth be told it was travelling a little quicker than I’d planned but thankfully it went straight into the middle of the cup. Thank you, Tom and Paul, for your company and generous donation to the Captain’s Charity.

Stevenson Cup report – from Chris
Saturday saw the Vice-Captain and I take on our 10th challenge of the season, looking to keep our winning streak going, it wasn’t going to be easy as we were up against Neil Manwaring and Lee Murray. We managed to scrape a halve at the opening two holes thanks to a couple of outrageous up and downs from the Vice-Captain before his excellent 3 nett 2 on the 4th moved us 1UP. We maintained that advantage up until the 8th, where Lee’s 4 nett 3 was good enough to win the hole and move the match back to all square, a superb birdie on the 9th from Neil followed and saw us reach the turn 1 down. The back nine was closely fought, but ultimately Neil and Lee were too good for us on the day and went on to claim a comfortable 3&2 victory. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for the game, and also for their generous donations to the Captains Charity. Well played chaps. |

Many congratulations to Jessica Churchley who kept up her recent good play with another win, this time claiming the Ladies Medal Final with a nett 77, although it was only just good enough to pip Penny Brown on countback.

Wednesday, 16 October Many congratulations to Jason Higgleton who won the Club Stableford with an excellent 38 points, he finished just ahead of Sean Griscti. It’s nice to see Sean back to form, especially after his Winter League partner duffed him up in the Sunday singles in Spain a few weeks ago.

Since the game began in the 15th century, there is one thing that has never changed – the ball being the only piece of equipment used on every shot. Despite this, it still gets a raw deal with some golfers viewing it as less important than the clubs used to hit it. So, we decided to take a look back and see how modern golf balls compare to those of yesteryear. |
| Callaway's Chrome Soft golf ball |
|
In the beginning Feathery balls reigned supreme for over 200 years in the early days of golf, but even they are relatively new compared to the original hairy balls (guess what they were stuffed with!). It's hard to imagine what it would be like playing with those balls these days, and even the later-developed Gutty and Haskell balls left golfers with little-to-no room for error.
|
Where we are today 100 years ago the thought of using a state-of-the-art Graphene-infused Dual Soft Core to minimise driver spin/maximise distance would have been unthinkable (and probably impossible) – but that is exactly what features in Callaway's Chrome Soft. Snazzy Truvis styling is something the Chrome Softs offer too for those golfers after something a little bit different. Why not grab a dozen or two and leave the Gutty at home? |
