Cameron Cup update
We’re now on the final stretch of Captain and Pro Challenges for 2019 with a challenge from Mark Hanlon and Dave Bragg. On a cold and crisp Sunday morning, Mark got the match off to the perfect start with a birdie on the 1st, followed by a nett birdie on the 2nd and we were 2DN already. We managed to edge back into the match and were all square after the front nine. My birdie on 10 was quickly cancelled out after an excellent approach on the 11th from Dave set up a nett birdie. I was a little fortunate to win the 12th after hitting my second shot too far left on to see it ricochet back into the middle of the fairway. On the very next hole, the Captain made a great up and down from the greenside bunker to halve the hole with us managing to halve the next few holes and by winning the 16th, we were able to close the match out on the 17th green. It was a lovely morning to play golf with some great company and as always thank you, Mark and Dave, for your generous donation to the Captain’s charity.
We were quickly into our 23rd challenge of the year and another tough match. 19 time Club Champion, Paul Earl and everyone’s favourite roofer Ken Drew.
After an early birdie on the 2nd put us ahead, it was quickly cancelled out on the 4th and then compounded by another hole loss on the 5th and in a blink of an eye, we were 1 down. Ken made an excellent birdie putt on the 7th for a half but the Captain came up trumps to win the 8th. I thought he was going to win the 9th as well but his nett 2 was matched by both Paul and Ken. After an excellent front nine, we were all square at the turn.
The back nine started in a similar fashion, we traded early birdies with Paul and Ken edging ahead by the 15th. They still had that one hole advantage as we stood on the 18th tee, we needed a big finish, which is exactly what we got. After some good approach shots, I holed a 12-foot putt for a birdie leaving Ken (after an excellent approach) just four feet away to birdie the hole and win the match, and he calmly stroked the putt in. What a finish, well played gents.
Congratulations to Paul and Ken and thank you for your company on and off the course and that all-important donation to the Captains charity
