Don't always believe what you hear on TV

I managed to watch some the golf on the PGA Tour this weekend and following on from recent newsletters I was amazed at some of the commentators. The one that got me was from Paul Azinger, according to him “these guys can land a ball within a three foot circle, distance wise, most of the time” I mean really? What a load of rubbish. The trouble is comments like that set an that expectation for everyone else to play that way. I know he has to say something but he could at least get his facts straight, they’re easy to find, actually they’re right here! For the record, from 100 yards away only 4% of Tour Pros shots are with 3 feet and it doesn’t get much better when you get closer to the hole, from 40 yards only 9% finish within 3 feet. It’s analysis like this that actually shows us how to get the best out of our golf games and not waste our time on things that are unachievable. 

Speaking of which, I was giving a lesson last week and got chatting about where a players head should be at impact. The usual comment I hear is that 'I looked up or lifted my head' (both not true by the way) . Anyway, I’d asked him to look at some pictures of good golfers at impact (I suggested Henrik Stenson or Annika Soremstam) and he sent me a picture of David Duval (ex World No1). There’s always more than one way to play your best golf, but to use some of these old golfing cliches or listen to plonkers like Paul Azinger talk about approach shot just isn’t going to help.
