We've had another good week working with lots of you and our MOT promotion. It was a particular session which stuck in my mind. I've played two rounds of golf since and it's made a big difference to my enjoyment on the golf course.
We were talking a lot about the mindset you need to be able to play your best round of golf. Filling your mind with complicated swing thoughts (however relevant) simply will not work, especially under pressure!! So I decided that I would practice what I preach and for my next round of golf I would set out some clear goals. I had decided these a few days before my round and the challenge was to stick to ONLY THESE thoughts as I played. For the record they were:
Improve my posture at address
Relax my hands, arms and shoulders at address
Then make a swing hard through the ball to my target
I took out a separate scorecard whereby I measured the exact yardage with my Bushnell rangefinder and then, and this is the important part, rated myself on how well I executed my goals. It had NOTHING to do with the outcome of the shot - just purely how well I followed my three-step routine. During the first round I felt very comfortable doing this and actually played pretty well but during the second round I found it much harder to trust these three thoughts. I seemed far more concerned over the outcome of the shots, maybe the expectation had changed because of the first round?
So, my advice for you over the next few rounds of golf is this:
You cannot expect a consistent result if you're not thinking consistently about the style of swing!
To play your best you must simplify what you are trying to do on the golf course.
Many congratulations to the men's Mail on Sunday Team who won their first round match last week. The team, consisting of Mark Barron, Neil Parker, Dave Tennant, Steve Marrion and Damian Connolly, beat Epsom Downs 3-2. A special mention Neil who despite giving 12 shots won 7&6! And to Dave who gave 8 shots and still won his match 5&4. Very impressive chaps!
The book for the 2015 Summer Knockouts will open on the 1st March. More details to follow in the next few weeks.
As the Captain has returned from his well-earned holiday, the Cameron Cup got underway again. First up was a challenge from Geoff Hubbard and Mark Compton. After a closely fought front nine, the Captain and I edged clear in the early stages on the back nine for a 5&3 win. Even the sunshine made an appearance on the back nine. Please see the video below of the four of us teeing off the 18th, I hope you'll notice which team still had the honour and of course we all hit the fairway!!
Next up was a challenge from Gary Ward and Sean Griscti (both players had over 40 points in the Monday Boys the previous week!). It was another close front nine with quite a few birdies made by us all. There had been only one hole in it all day and it was still all square with four holes to go. Sean then made a great birdie three on the 15th to go one up followed by Gary playing a fantastic flop shot onto the 17th green for a halve and they never let their lead go - winning 1up on the 18th.
Last week I got to go to Twickenham to watch England play Italy in the Six Nations.
It was an amazing atmosphere and after a very slow start England finally came good. I didn't realise the size and speed of the players these days, I wouldn't want to get in the way of any of them!
Some of the latest industry testing has found that:
If your woods are over 3 years old you could be giving up an average of 15 yards

If your irons are over 5 years old you could be giving up an average of 15 yards
