Many thanks to Colin Steel and Adam Romain for their time last Saturday. I hope they found the session useful. The golf ball is often over looked in terms of making a significant difference but looking at just the results of these two players IT REALLY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. We tested the Titleist ProV1, Srixon AD333 & Callaway Supersoft golf balls with both golfers using their own drivers.
Adam has a handicap of 4, and has a tendency is to hit a very high ball flight. Based on his handicap you’d be forgiven for thinking Adam would ideally suited to the ever popular Pro V1 golf ball. When you look at just the average distance this ball came out on top, however for a driver his ball had too much backspin producing a higher than normal ball flight. Although the ball speed was high we were missing some extra yardage. When Adam used the Srixon AD333 the ball speed and backspin were slightly reduced but still producing a similar yardage. The interesting part was the final ball, the Callaway Supersoft. Adams ball speed dropped by over 5 mph (which is a massive amount) because the compression of the ball is too low for his swing speed. But because the backspin had nearly halved he INCREASED his yardage by over 10 YARDS! The ideal golf ball for Adam is a high compression ball with a very low spin rate. I gave Adam a sleeve of TaylorMade Tour Preferred X and the Callaway SR2 golf ball to trial on the course.
Adam commented "I was very surprised by the results of the Callaway Supersoft ball, the feel with the driver was of a more expensive ball. The TaylorMade Tour Preferred X and the Callaway SR2 balls both have a similar feel of a ProV1x and give me a good ball flight, a few yards extra distance and have great feel for control around the greens. I’ll look forward to further testing & good results on the course. I’d like to thank Rob for his time & advice with such a variety of balls to choose from, a ball fitting has made a difference. "
Colin plays off a 21 handicap, his tendency is for the ball to fade to the right. Again his results were very enlightening because of Colin’s natural ball flight the minimum amount of side spin created would be essential if we wanted to gain the maximum amount of distance. Colin’s preferred golf ball is the Titleist ProV1 and was the first ball we tested because of the construction of the ball it produced the lowest ball speed with a medium amount of side spin to Colin’s shots resulting in a loss of distance. The Srixon AD333 fared slightly better with an increase of ball speed but still a high amount of side spin, however we gained a few extra yards overall. The Callaway Supersoft was the last ball we tested with some excellent results. The softer compression suited Colin’s swing speed which in turn meant there was far less side spin on his shots resulting in not only his furthest shots but also his straightest! Colin took away a sleeve of Callaway Supersoft and the Srixon Soft Feel golf balls to try on the course.
Colin said "I went off and played 9 holes afterwards the results were much better than expected but both balls gave me further distance, less side spin, straighter and behaved nicely for the 2nd shots. Will have a few more "trials" with these and will then decide which I prefer."
