Following on from my newsletter last week, I have a challenge for you. The next time you play a round of golf, take a separate scorecard out with you. Pick three things that you're going to focus on whilst playing. You'll remember from last week's newsletter these shouldn't be too technical. Your challenge is to play golf sticking to only these thoughts. Every time you hit a full shot ask yourself what were you thinking of? Was it one of the three areas you'd picked out or did something else creep in? To make sure you're really effective, score how well you do. Give yourself a tick if your focus was in the correct place and a cross if not (remember this has nothing to do with where the ball went or how good a strike it was). You're purely scoring how well your mind was working.
I regularly do this when I play, it's a great way to measure how effective I am on the golf course and if done correctly, will improve the chances of me playing my best….. Now that's got to be good!! Click here to see one of my scorecards from a recent round of golf. You'll notice none of my thoughts were technically based. If you practice properly you don't have to go to the golf course with your head full of weird and wonderful swing thoughts! My point is this:
You'll play better golf if you keep it simple on the golf course
We all have limitations on how well we can swing a golf club, unfortunately none of us are going to swing like Rory McIlroy (sorry!) - we're just not physically capable! But….. Is it possible to have the same mental strength as him?
