Ben Taylor wins the NCAA - I'm sure you'll all join me in congratulating Ben Taylor on winning the NCAA Golf Championship in America. It's one of the biggest Amateur competitions in the world! Ben, past member and son of Phil Taylor (who used to be the Head Professional at Tyrrells Wood), is now aiming for an exclusive place in this year's Walker Cup, with form like this he's got a great chance to make the team.
A real game changer from Jo!
Have you ever wondered why you can't get rid of that slice? Or why no matter how hard you hit it you can't get that extra 15 yards on your drive? The most likely answer is that you have a physical issue that is preventing you swinging efficiently.
Last week I attended the TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) Certification course at The Belfry. TPI is the world's leading organisation dedicated to the study of how the body works in relation to the golf swing. Since its inception in 2003, it has studied thousands of golfers from top professionals to weekend club players. The data collected shows how a properly functioning body allows a golfer to swing the club in the most efficient way possible. Additionally, TPI has analysed how physical limitations in a player's body can adversely affect the golf swing and cause injury, the most common of which being back pain.
In addition to research, TPI trains and certifies golf professionals, physiotherapists and fitness trainers and equips them with an in-depth understanding of how the body should work in the swing in order to be efficient. TPI believes there are many ways to swing a golf club, but there is one efficient way for every golfer to swing based on what they can physically do. The most efficient swing is not the same for every golfer because efficiency is unique to their body.
To achieve an efficient swing a golfer must first be screened. This involves an assessment of swing mechanics, movement quality and current health and injury history. Once the screen is finished, the results are used to create a unique plan for that golfer. The plan may include coaching on swing mechanics, physical therapy, fitness training or all of the above. I haven't met a golfer yet that doesn't want to improve, but this is very hard to achieve without an understanding of how your body functions. The physical screen is for golfers at every level that wish to improve their golf. The screen itself highlights any physical issues, we then match this up with how your body works in the golf swing.
A 60 minute Screening and Swing Analysis session includes:
- Full TPI physical screen
- Analysis of you golf swing
- Plan for improvement - coaching plan, simple drills and exercises
- If needed, a referral to a physiotherapist or a fitness trainer

Sometimes things just don't go to plan
Last week I headed down to Somerset to play in the PGA Club Professionals Championship at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club. The four round national competition is one of the biggest tournaments I can compete in. The links layout was extremely tough and I haven't played in wind like that before - give me a nice parkland course in Surrey any day! The tournament got underway on Tuesday with none of the 144 golf professionals breaking par, as for me I got off to a horrendous start and things didn't get much better (golf can be so frustrating sometimes!!).
I finally got my head back together and finished the round a little steadier. Round two on Wednesday was still just as windy and although I did play much better, I still didn't score particularly well. I unfortunately missed the 36-hole cut and came away from the tournament extremely frustrated with myself. Golf can be a tough game sometimes, however hard you work and prepare, it doesn't guarantee success……But for some reason, I still love it! For the full results please click here.
