I think it's fair to say I had a mixed week last week. I played a tournament last Wednesday (you remember that day… it's the day it rained & rained & rained. In fact it pretty much chucked it down all day!! I was supposed to be playing 36 holes but due to the weather it was reduced to 18 holes. My round started just after 8am & with all of the rain delays I finally finished it just before 6pm. I was drenched and to top it off I probably played my worst round of golf I'd ever played as a golf Professional. Sometimes this game can be just so frustrating, but it does give me the motivation to keep trying to get better - One day I might just crack it!!
Now, normally after playing a bad round I'm a miserable sod for a while (hard to believe I know!) however I soon cheered up as we had arranged to take the family to CarFest. We've been a few time before, CarFest was conceived by Chris Evans in 2012 & raises money for Children In Need. If you're into cars, music & food - a yes for all 3 for me! Then it's well worth a visit. The highlight for Freddie was seeing the Stig driving a very nice Aston Martin! He didn't say hi to us though.
Just how much has technology improved?
Whilst the weather has been a little hit & miss last week, we took the time to do some iron testing in our Swing Studio. I've been really impressed with PING's brand new GMax iron and wondered how it would compare with a slightly older iron. I chose a Mizuno JPX 825 7 iron, which was released in 2012, both clubs used were 7 irons and I used the same golf ball, Callaway's Chrome Soft. The only variable was me!
The results were really quite impressive, especially when you consider the Mizuno iron is only a few years old.
The main improvement was the extra ball speed I gained using the GMax iron, this extra power off the club-face made a 10 yard difference straight away. You can see the full analysis by clicking here or on the image to see a larger version.
If you're looking to gain a few extra precious yards from your irons then I really can't recommend these irons enough. All PING irons are custom fitted which is FREE of charge to Tyrrells Members, we also have demo 7-irons for you to try on the course. Please click here to book your FREE session.
