It's been a very traumatic week for me, but more of that later. Firstly, I hope you all have been enjoying the Rugby World Cup?! I sat down with Nicky last Friday to watch the England game, we must have been 10 minutes into the game before she realised we weren't watching the Six Nations, oh dear! And don't get me started on the Solheim Cup 'incident' on Sunday morning where Suzann Pettersen's decision not to 'give' a tap-in putt and claim the hole for the European Team was quite shocking and not the best advert for golf. I'm sure the American Team used this as motivation and played some superb golf to win, I just hope the competition isn't reported and remembered for the wrong reasons.
But enough about that, let's get back to my week. Freddie (my 5-year-old) has started football training at his school this term, we've played lots of football in the park and he's not bad - even if I do say so myself! The 'issue' occurred when we were talking about what he should wear. The conversation went something like this:
Freddie - 'Daddy, can I have a football kit for school now, please?'
Me - 'No problems, Freddie, we can pop into Horsham and pick up a Manchester United (my team) kit.'
Freddie - 'Erm, Daddy…….' and then he said the two words that still haunt me …. 'I want an Arsenal kit'
Me - 'Noooooooooooooo!'
I'm still struggling to come to terms with it and so if I'm looking a little sad this week, you'll know why.
Which is best - the i20 or i series iron? There's only one way to find out!
We've been busy again this week, not only with the arrival of Callaway's new Great Big Bertha driver, but also improving members' golf games. This week saw Tyrrells member Steve Hunt's old PING i20 (four-years-old) take on the new PING i series iron.
The results were pretty impressive - see stats picture below. Because of the increased ball speed and a reduction in side spin, Steve managed to hit the new i series 7-iron over 10 yards further! Not only that, the dispersion had improved….. A pretty good combination!
With all of this modern technology you'd be forgiven for thinking that just by changing clubs you'll be 10 yards better off…. If only that was the case! In my view, golf clubs can help certain golfers but it's important to remember that it's a combination of club and technique. I spent some time with another Tyrrells member, Gary Allcott, this week who was interested in my recent claims of new irons hitting the ball further. After testing a few different irons it was pretty clear that the difference in performance was minimal and not worth the expense in changing. We discussed that if Gary wanted to hit the ball better, lessons and effective practice would be far more beneficial to him. I'm not interested in selling a set of clubs for the wrong reasons.
My philosophy is to offer honest, impartial advice about improving your golf

How about this for an impressive bit of kit...
Last week Paul and Matt were using a strange looking machine on the putting green - see the video here by clicking on the image. I'm sure you all know, it's an Air2G2. It's really quite impressive, it injects compressed air up to depths of 12 inches deep into the playing surface to immediately relieve compaction and the best part, it leaves the surface playable straight away with no mess! I'm looking forward to some good greens over the winter!
The next 10 days at Tyrrells is as follows:
